This week I wrote and today I sent off thank you letters to all those who donated funds to Refugee Action Collective for the Baxter 05 Convergence.
This generous financial support helped to send a bus of Brisbane activists to protest outside Baxter Immigration Detention Centre in South Australia as part of Baxter 05: A Convergence for Human Rights.
The week at Baxter helped draw media, public and political attention to the injustices of this inhumane government policy.
Those who attended were involved in a range of protest actions from organised trespassing to silent vigils. One memorable action that attracted media attention was a group of Brisbane women, all in black with their mouths and eyes strapped shut, who stood outside the front gates of the centre holding signs saying βIs this what democracy looks like?β
Feedback from the Brisbane contingency was that the weekend was emotionally and physically taxing, yet inspiring.
If you would like more information on the activities the Brisbane group were involved in, RAC has collected stories, photographs and videos and will be sharing these tomorrow at 6.30pm at the Metro Arts Theatre (109 Edward Street, the City).
