Lawyers say the ruling has huge implications and the Government should abandon offshore processing.

Bowen says the ruling might mean people are detained longer while they wait for court rulings.

Morrison says it sends a massive signal out there to people smugglers that Australia’s system has fallen apart and ‘you can come on down’.

Another lawyer says the whole idea of keeping people in detention for long periods has to be reviewed and alternatives to detention have to be seriously considered.
