Today Greens branches from around Queensland got out and about in the community to be seen and heard – and to also watch and listen.
Norma Nord and myself represented the Bayside Branch at the park on Oxford Street, Bulimba where we held a stall and listening post. We then doorknocked all the businesses and distributed flyers to those behind the counter.
Unfortunately it’s illegal to hand out flyers to passersby in the street which makes it difficult for grassroots democracy and for affordable advertising for community groups. Interestingly, it’s not illegal to give away products for free. This means I can receive a free ball for my dog from a flea removal company but I cannot receive a flyer for a fundraising event from a non-for-profit charity.
I am probably allowed to spruik from my stall, but that’s just – like – so 19th century. Instead I spruik here now online.
